Summer Opportunities at Pinnacle Mountain State Park

Summer opportunities abound this month and next at Pinnacle Mountain State Park.

Many shaded hikes, evening lake cruises, water activities, and other evening beckon all ages to experience the fun of summer. Several opportunities are available for star gazing including star gazing cruises on nearby Lake Maumelle.

As always the diverse habitats of the 3 square miles of Pinnacle Mountain State Park offer a multitude of opportunities to discover the natural world. From 7 peaks to three rivers, our programs and special events give visitors the chance to discover them all.

Pinnacle Mountain State Park. :much more than a mountain!

Sat. 11 Geology Hike 10:00 11:00 am Visitor Center

Come on a guided hike to several nearby geological features to learn all about local geology, the lay of the land, mountains and lost seas, and much more. We will meet giant eroding boulders on the Rocky Valley Trail and layers of 280 million-year-old rocks in the cliffs of an old quarry.

Sat. 11 Discover Rocks & Minerals 3:00 4:00 pm Visitor Center

Be a rock detective as we investigate some real Arkansas rocks including sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic:and even meet a few crystals!

Sat. 11 Rocking the Boat Kayak Float 7:00 9:30 pm Big Maumelle Boat Launch

Paddle downstream on the Big Maumelle River with Park Interpreter Susan to take a unique look at some beautiful rock formations on the edge of Pinnacle Mountain State Park. Space is very limited and advance payment is required. Age 10 and up. Height and weight restrictions may apply please call ahead! Fee: $35 per kayak.

Sun. 12 Landforms of Pinnacle Mountain 8:30 9:30 am Visitor Center Overlook

How well do YOU know central Arkansas? Park Interpreter Susan will be on the Visitor Center overlook to point out the landforms that can be seen and talk about how we have affected them:and how they have shaped our lives!

Sun. 12 Boulder Discovery 10:00 11:00 am Rocky Valley Trailhead

Meet Park Interpreter James to investigate some nearby boulders to see fossils, busted boulders the size of a truck, and more!

Sun. 12 Be A Rock Detective 12:30 1:30 pm Visitor Center

Discover some of the basic ways to investigate and identify real rocks including sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic. Join Park Interpreter James for this fun hands-on activity.

Sun. 12 "Am I A Rock?" 2:00 3:00 pm West Summit Trailhead

You may be surprised which everyday objects we all use come from rocks! Find Park Interpreter Susan near the West Summit Trailhead to guess which objects she has set out are from rocks and which are not, then learn about important rocks you can find right here in Arkansas.

Sun. 12 Rock 'N Roll Roving 3:00 4:00 pm Picnic Area

Find Park Interpreter Susan as she rounds out Geology Weekend in the picnic area with a short roving program about Arkansas's state rock and mineral.

Wed. 15 Home School Days: Mountain Murals 2:00 4:00 pm Pinnacle Pavilion

Let's work together as a team to paint a mural! Learn how to complete a mural project based on beautiful Pinnacle Mountain State Park. Meet at the Pinnacle Pavilion near the West Summit Trailhead.

Thurs. 16 Moonlight Kayak Float 8:00 11:00 pm Big Maumelle Boat Launch

Join a moonlit journey on the open waters of the Big Maumelle River. Guided by Park Interpreter Kristina, the float will be an excellent opportunity to experience the serenity of twilight as it emerges into its moonlit splendor of natural sights and sounds. Space is very limited and advance payment is required. Age 10 and up. Height and weight restrictions may apply please call ahead! Fee: $35 per kayak.
