23rd annual fish and fowl dinner to benefit Bro. Paul Holderfield's NLR Soup Kitchen and Shelter
It will be the 23rd annual fish and fowl dinner at the Verizon Arena on 10/23, 5-8 pm to benefit Bro. Paul Holderfield's NLR Soup Kitchen and Shelter at 116 So. Pine St.
>
> This amazing event is Friendly Chapel's only fundraiser to support feeding the homeless and those down on their luck for a year, as well as providing shelter for homeless families. Tickets are $10 each or a book of ten for $80. Children's tickets are $6. Shuttle buses run 4:30–8:00 p.m. from church lots on the corner of Washington and Pine and bank lots to the west of the arena.
>
> Bro. Paul doesn't pursue state or federal money, believing that people will just show up at the right time to fulfill the needs of the people he serves. So far, he has certainly been right because an army of volunteers (200-300) shows up to cook and serve thousands of meals (I think they hit 6,000 a couple of yrs ago).
>
> In addition to the soup kitchen and shelter, there is a thrift shop where donated clothes are $2 or less (free if someone can't pay). Bro. Paul's mother runs the store with a dedicated group of women. The proceeds are used to outfit children for the school year. They have an arrangement with JC Penny to shop in the store after hours and spend $200/child for about 80 children.
>
> Then there are the holiday meals and gift baskets, and another event where children can come in, pick out gifts for their families, and get them wrapped by volunteers. There's a senior citizen's group for grandparents raising grandchildren and support for a group home with disabled individuals.
>
> The Holderfield family has been serving people in NLR for many years. Friendly Chapel was started by Bro. Paul's father, and his whole family is involved in their ministry. Everyone is welcome to serve or be served - all religions and all individuals with a heart to serve. Nothing is wasted and no one willing to serve in any way is turned away. The people who volunteer for the fundraiser come back every year. Most of the leadership volunteers have been involved for two decades.
