April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. In recognition of this, Krav Maga and Fitness of Arkansas, will be offering rape prevention classes starting March 6. These one hour classes will be every Saturday in March and will culminate in a final 3 hour seminar in April, allowing participants to use their skills against an actual attacker in a padded suit.
Nationally certified self-defense instructors and defensive tactics experts will be available to answer questions and give advice to the general public on how to prevent and survive a violent encounter!
Little Rock, AR– On March 6, 2010, Krav Maga and Fitness of Arkansas in Little Rock will be offering self defense classes to all women ages 13 and older every Saturday in March at 10am. These classes are a build up to a final seminar on April 3rd, that will pit the participants in a final test of the skills they have learned against an actual attacker. This final event will be held from 8:00AM – 11:00AM at the Krav Maga and Fitness of Arkansas training center, 1205B S. University, Little Rock, 72204. Cost for this class is $29.99 for the entire course.
Krav Maga (krahv muh-GAH) is the official self-defense system for the men and women of the Israeli Defense Forces, and is required training for scores of law enforcement agencies in the United States. Krav Maga is recognized as the most efficient self defense system for real-life situations, emphasizing practical defenses against real attacks. The system is now embraced by thousands of civilians nationwide and many celebrities on the screens in Hollywood.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice more than 2.5 million women experience violence annually. Statistics also show that every 90 seconds a woman is raped in America.
According to the Arkansas Coalition Against Sexual Assault, statistics show that every 60 seconds, 1.3 women (age 18 and over) in the U.S. are forcibly raped. That is 78 women raped each hour; 1871 each day, or 683,000 each year.(1) Taking into consideration that more than half of all rape victims are under the age of 18, this statistic becomes even more devastating. The American Medical Association has called sexual assault the “silent, violent epidemic.”(www.acasa.ws)
According to Arkansas crime rates from the Disaster Center, in 2008, there were 1395 forcible rapes in the state of Arkansas. Arkansas ranked 4th in the nation for forcible rapes for the year 2008.* *(based on reported incidents per 100,000 people - www.disastercenter.com/crime/arcrime.htm)
Greater Little Rock needs community involvement and support. We all have to work together to raise awareness and promote strong, alert, confident and healthy attitudes and behaviors to end America’s sexual assault epidemic. Krav Maga and Fitness of Arkansas will make this training available to all women in the community who wish to possess the skills needed to prevent or survive a violent assault.
Mr. Devin Shirley, a certified Krav Maga Worldwide Instructor and one of only a handful of black belt instructors in the country, will be conducting this empowering course. Mr. Shirley has trained hundreds of students and teaches civilians, military and the men and women of law enforcement how to protect themselves and go home safely.
Learning self-defense is not just learning to kick and punch an attacker. Self-defense begins with not thinking of oneself as a victim. Attackers choose their victims the way predators choose their prey. They always go after the weak, isolated, young or old because they are an easy target. If you look strong, alert and healthy, you have a much better chance of avoiding an attack. Our expert instructors will teach women the self-confidence and skills required to AVOID BECOMING A VICTIM.
