THE BAYLOR UNIVERSITY A CAPPELLA CHOIR IN CONCERT

Baylor University’s nationally acclaimed A Cappella Choir will make a guest appearance at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 5, as part of its 2011 Spring Concert Tour. This performance will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the church, which is located at 723 Center Street in Little Rock. The program will feature music by Johannes Brahms, Stephen Chatman, Craig Hella Johnson, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Lerner & Lowe. Also to be heard are choral arrangements of spirituals and American love songs.
The Baylor University A Cappella Choir, widely noted for its ability to excel in a broad range of musical styles, is Baylor’s premier choral organization. During its long and illustrious history, the 65-voice choir has performed abroad in European concert tours to the British Isles, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Korea. Conducting the choir will be Dr. Alan Raines, a highly sought-after guest artist and clinician who serves Baylor University as the Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. He holds a B.M. degree from Valparaiso University and M.M. and D.M.A. degrees from UCLA, where he was Assistant Conductor of the Angeles Chorale. Dr. Raines joined the Baylor University faculty in the fall of 2009. He follows in a notable succession of choral directors, including the long and distinguished tenures of Euell Porter, Hugh Sanders, and Donald Bailey.
