Brown Bag Lecture - The Spence Family and the Civil War in 1862
Tom and Alex Spence were among the first Arkansawyers to enlist in the Confederate Army in 1861. By the second year of the war, Tom was a seasoned veteran, while Alex had yet so see combat. By the end of 1862, both men would serve in some of the hardest battles of the Army of Tennessee. Would the brothers survive to 1863 or lie in a battlefield grave? Speaker Mark Christ, community outreach director for the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, will present their stories. Admission is free. Participants are welcome to bring a sack lunch; soft drinks and water are provided.
