Almost 30 years ago, Chip Davis revolutionized the Christmas music industry when he released Mannheim Steamroller Christmas. Before that, the holiday music industry was of little interest to any artists but those at the end of their careers. With Mannheim Steamroller, Davis transformed popular instrumental music by combining classical compositions, rock rhythms, harpsichords and recorders with electric bass and synthesizers. Under Davis’ direction, Christmas classics get new life and take on new personalities. When composing for the group, Davis drew inspiration from an 18th century orchestra in Mannheim, Germany that worked to build intensity in their music through layers of sound, color, texture and volume to “flatten” the listener. And thus, the Steamroller was born. Davis has received 19 gold records, eight platinum and four multi-platinum records throughout his career. Many of the performers have been with Davis since the band began, and many others have been students of former members of the group. Though Davis no longer performs with the group, he uses this opportunity to explore new areas for Mannheim Steamroller’s two bands. This performance is part of the Popcorn Indiana® American Masters Series. Additional support provided by Greenwood Gearhart, Inc. and Bob and Becky Alexander.
