A pioneer of American Modernism, Jan Matulka (1890-1972) was a Czech-born painter who taught at the Arts Student League in New York City and moved effortlessly between American and European art circles during modernism's formative years. Prior to immigrating to the United States in 1907, Matulka took his first art classes in Prague. After his arrival in the United States, he continued his art education at the National Academy of Design. In 1917, Matulka was the first recipient of the Joseph Pulitzer traveling scholarship which allowed him to study in Paris. Through his travels, he rendered his artistic style to incorporate Cubism and other modernist techniques. This exhibition presents over 30 of his works on paper that were created during the modernism movement ranging in subject matter from the human body to cityscapes.
