Women in Art

Featured Artists Paula Kalina and Ruth Byrn will have their art displayed July, August and September. The St. Vincent Foundation receives money from the sale of each piece of art. The money is used to pay for things like immunizations for children whose parents can't afford them; prescription drugs for patients who don't have medical insurance; mastectomy bras, prostheses, makeovers and wigs for women treated for cancer.

The Women's Health Advisory Board at St. Vincent Health System started the Arkansas Women in Art Series in 1999. "Patients who are comfortable in their surroundings often respond better to treatment," said Kay Jenkins, curator for the art series. Jenkins says patients and their families frequently comment on how much they like seeing original artwork on the walls of the hospital. They say they find comfort in the art and can relate to it on a personal level, she added.
