With All Deliberate Speed: The AP in Little Rock

On view at the Clinton School will be a manuscript exhibit, With All Deliberate Speed: The AP in Little Rock, which will include editorial correspondence, wire copy and photographs drawn from the recently established AP Corporate Archives, which document AP's efforts to cover t he crisis beginning in the summer of 1957. The exhibit will launch on Sept. 12 with a panel discussion at the school entitled Covering Little Rock, featuring former New York Times managing editor and professor of journalism at the University of Maryland Gene Roberts, co-author of the recently published book The Race Beat, a history of the press during the Civil Rights Movement, which won a Pulitzer Prize in 2007.

The Associated Press will unveil its Central High 1957 archival exhibit at the Clinton School with a panel discussion moderated by former Arkansas Gazette reporter Roy Reed, author of Faubus: The Life and Times of an American Prodigal with panelists Gene Roberts, co-author of the Pulitzer prize-winning Race Beat (2007) and Professor of Journalism at the University of Maryland; David R. Davies, dean of the University of Southern Mississippi Honors College and author of The Press and Race: Mississippi Journalists Confront the Movement; Hoyt Purvis, University of Arkansas journalism professor and former press secretary to Sen. Bill Fulbright; and Kathryn Johnson, former AP civil rights reporter who covered the movement throughout the South from her base at the Atlanta bureau.
