Each year, Keep Arkansas Beautiful promotes the Great Arkansas Cleanup (GAC), a massive statewide volunteer litter-pickup campaign, in September and October. Litter-pickup events along roadsides and shorelines are organized by local coordinators who recruit community volunteers to participate. The kickoff date is September 11 and the cleanup campaign lasts through October 30. Environmentalism and volunteerism is extremely important among Arkansans and GAC provides an opportunity to make a difference. Also, this year is the first underwater cleanup with dive teams scheduled to clean Arkansas lakes. Last year, the GAC included 138 local events across the state. The 15,441 volunteers picked up 3.3 million pounds of litter from 1,223 miles of roadway, 193 parks and public areas, and 364 miles of shoreline. The volunteer effort provided the state and participating communities a cost-saving value of more than $1 million. Although participation in the cleanup effort continues to grow, 70% of Arkansans have not participated in a Keep Arkansas Beautiful-organized cleanup. This year, Keep Arkansas Beautiful would like to encourage more participation in keeping our state clean for all our residents.
