Museum Exhibit Highlights Apollo 11 Moon Rock
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (January 14, 2011) A new exhibit at the Museum of Discovery features items gathered during the July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the Earth's moon.
The exhibit, on display through April 2, 2011, includes a case that was given to the state of Arkansas by President Richard Nixon. The case contains fragments ("moon rocks") from the Earth's moon. The case also contains a miniature Arkansas flag and a small plaque that reads, "The flag of your state was carried to the Moon and back by Apollo 11 and this fragment of the Moon's surface was brought to Earth by the crew of that first manned lunar landing." The exhibit also contains images from the Apollo 11 trip and information about the science and technology that was used for the trip. The exhibit was created by Joel Gordon, Director of Exhibits & Facilities.
The exhibit is open to the public and is included in the cost of admission.
The Museum of Discovery is undergoing construction and renovations to transform it into a premiere science center. The Museum remains open to the public through April 2, 2011. The Museum building will be closed from April to December 2011, with programs and activities continuing at locations around the state. A grand reopening is scheduled for January 2012.
