BENTON - Mae Ellen Dare Reeves, 102, of Benton died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007. She was the daughter of Sarah Ellen Bailey Dare and Dr. John William Dare. Born in Pope County, Ark., Feb. 21, 1905, she was the youngest of nine brothers and sisters. Her husband of 60 years, Harold Joshua Reeves, and her son, John Dare Reeves, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Lynn Smithwick of Maumelle and Judy Lane and husband, Lee of Conway; seven grandchildren, Elton Fitzhugh, Dana Landers and Michael Chambers, all of Benton, Jeff Smithwick of Maumelle, Mae Lynn Smithwick of North Little Rock, Kelly Chambers of Florida, Bryan Chambers of Oregon; and six greatgrandchildren.

Spanning more than a century, Mae's life was rich, productive and creative. She was a licensed cosmetologist and owned her own beauty shop during the late 1920s & early 1930s. During the late 1930s and throughout WWII, she assisted her husband in managing their theater, the old Lee Theater on 13th St. in Little Rock. After moving to Benton in 1951, she became the Newcomer Greeting Service Hostess and welcomed hundreds of new families to Benton, a job she enjoyed and a career she pursued until her retirement in 1967.

In 1968, she fulfilled another of her dreams and opened an antique shop. She flourished in the antique business for 25 years, closing her shop only because she could no longer find "high quality antiques" to offer her customers. Travel was another favorite activity, leading her from home to Mexico, British Columbia, Quebec, New York, and Washington, D.C., all by land, allowing her "to see some of the countryside." In her later years, she studied and began to paint in oils. Her paintings have hung in a number of exhibits in Benton and Little Rock. More than anything, Mae relished the challenge, whatever it was,and was never happier than when proving that she "could do it." She was a Christadelphian and a lifelong student of the Holy Bible.

She leaves behind a heartbroken, yet strong and resilient family, all of whom learned many lessons set by her example.

A Memorial Service by Ashby Funeral Home will be Oct. 25, 2007, at 12 noon at Ashbys with burial at Pinecrest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Arkansas Children's Hospital, NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit).
