— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 24, 1907

Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks passed through Little Rock last night en route to St. Louis. His train stopped here several minutes and the vice president spoke from a nearby truck. When he had finished and attempted to step down, the second executive of the land fell and rolled upon the ground. He was not injured but sustained a slight shaking up.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 24, 1957

WASHINGTON - Herbert Brownell Jr. resigned today as United States attorney general. He said the settling of federal policy in the Little Rock school integration dispute had freed him to return to private law practice. The White House said President Eisenhower accepted the resignation and would appoint Deputy Attorney General William P. Rogers Jr. to the Cabinet post.

Ivan Duda, a Little Rock private investigator who formerly had Mary (Lee) Orsini for a client, said in an interview that five telephone calls were traced from his home telephone to her phone a few hours after the slaying of Alice McArthur, but he said he didn't make the calls and didn't know who did.

The state Ethics Commission released its official opinion on Gov. Mike Huckabee's use of a state police airplane for personal trips, finding it "is not willing to compromise or dilute" the governor's security.
