STUTTGART - F.M. Snook discovered a great prize while examining the inside of a violin he bought secondhand several years ago. The violin bears the stamp: "Joseph Guarnerius, Fecit, Cremonae, Anno 1757."

Oct. 25, 1957

Governor Faubus today accepted 8,500 de-federalized Arkansas National Guard troops and at the same time called for a congressional investigation of the manner in which 1,800 others are being retained for school integration duty. The chief executive gave reporters copies of a telegram he said he was sending to president Eisenhower and Secretary of Army Brucker demanding that the other 1,800 be returned immediately to National Guard status.

The state executive who manipulated the hiring system to put a legislator on the state payroll at an extraordinary salary asked for and received the lawmaker's resignation from the job. Richard Weiss, director of the Department of Finance and Administration, got the resignation of state Rep. Billy Joe Purdom, D-Yellville.
