Blaze destroys Bentonville hotel under construction

— Fire consumed a hotel under construction in Bentonville, leaving behind only charred stairs and an elevator shaft.

The four-story, $3.6 million Suburban Extended Stay hotel was to open its doors in January with 100 rooms. Fire officials estimate damages in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Bentonville Fire Chief Dan White says the fire swept through the wood-frame structure early Saturday morning and it quickly collapsed. The fire remains under investigation, as smoldering debris made it difficult for fire marshals to begin their work.

The Suburban Extended Stay franchise is owned by KSDT Lodging of Leawood, Kansas.
