Residents win awards at state fair

— Residents of the Three Rivers area competed in various contests at the recent Arkansas State Fair. Many took the fair's theme - More Fun for Everyone - to heart and came away as winners.

Following is a listing of those local winners.

◊The Bill Williams Family of Searcy participated in several special contests.

Mom, Ruth, won first place and $200 for her entry, Hidden Valley Hawaiian Sandwich, in the Hidden Valley Ranch Family Friendly Food Contest, and third place and a $25 gift certificate to Floral Express, a Little Rock flower market, in the adult division of the Floral Express Flower Arranging Contest.

Son, Ben, 16, won first place and $75 with his entry, Creamy Sausage and Corn Crescent Rolls, in the appetizer category of Odom's Tennessee Pride Sausage Contest.

Daughter, Meredith, 13, won first place and $60 in the kids category of the Great American SPAM Championship with her entry, Spicy Hawaiian SPAM Sandwiches, and second place and a $50 gift certificate to Floral Express in Little Rock in the Floral Express Flower Arranging Contest.

Daughter, Stephanie, 10, won second place and $75, in the Pulaski County Farm Bureau Kids Cookie Contest, and third place and a $25 gift certificate to Floral Express in Little Rock in the Floral Express Flower Arranging Contest;

Daughter, Emma, 9, wonfirst place and $150 in the Pulaski County Farm Bureau Kids Cookie Contest, and first place and $100 for her entry, Fruity Chicken and Rice Salad, in the Arkansas Farm Bureau Rice-Cooking Contest.

Son, Daniel, 6, competed for the first time this year, entering the Make It With Malt-O-Meal contest.

◊Katie Barger, 16-year-old daughter of Kenneth and Kristie Barger of Quitman, was first runner-up in the Miss Arkansas State Rodeo Queen Contest. She was also named Miss Congeniality.

◊Matthew Loggains, 15-yearold son of Eddy and Lori Loggains of Violet Hill, showed the Champion Bull and Reserve Champion Bull as well as theChampion Female in the Junior Charolais Cattle Show.

◊Rasha Martin, 17-year-old daughter of David and Rita Martin of Judsonia, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship for Overall Excellence in Livestock Exhibiting at the state fair. She showed the Reserve Champion Female and Champion Bull in the Junior Gelbvieh Cattle Show. The scholarship was one of two $5,000 scholarships presented by one of the state fair's newest sponsors, Chesapeake Energy.

◊Brenda DeFord of Heber Springs won first place and $250 for her entry, Cheesy Peachy Pork, in the Arkansas Pork Producers Association Pork Recipe Rally. She also won second place and $75 forher entry, Hawaiian Breakfast Bread, in the Fleischmann's Yeast Bakers for a United Cause Contest.

◊Colleen Crispi of Heber Springs won third place and $25 in the salad class of the Arkansas Farm Bureau Rice Cooking Contest.

◊Keta Rhew of Bradford showed the Best Pie, an apple pie, in the Open Baked Foods Competition.

◊Kathleen Hollosi of Searcy showed the Best Candy, Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge, in the Open Baked Foods Com-petition. She also won a Best of Show ribbon in decorative painting.

◊Stephanie Smith, 13-yearold daughter of John and Teri Smith of Bee Branch, showed the Best Candy with Cornflake Candy and the Best Wild Card with Chocolate Cobbler in the Junior Baked Foods Competition.

◊Tres Huervos, comprised of Clay Hoffman, 16, Harry Clark, 13, and Jed Clark, 16, of Searcy, won the Variety competition of the Youth Talent Contest. They received a trophy and $150.

◊Kaleena Hutchins, 16, of Melbourne, won the Best Overall Talent award and instrumental solo competition of the Youth Talent Contest. She won $100 as the Best Overall Talent winner and $150 as the instrumental solo winner.

◊Terry Sue Satkowski, who lives near the Faulkner-Pulaski county line, won third place and $50 in the KC Masterpiece Memorable Meals Contest with her entry, Heated BBQ Potato Salad, and second place and $50 in the main dish category of Odom's Tennessee Pride Sausage Recipe Contest.

◊Monica Kidd, 10, and Christopher Kidd, 17, children of Cathy Kidd of Judsonia, won first place and $75 in the Family Ice Cream Making Contest sponsored by Arkansas Farm Bureau's Dairy Division. They won the honor with Reese's Peanut Butter and Chocolate Ice Cream.

◊Clementine Davis of Searcy received a Best of Show ribbon and an assortment of Leisure Arts products for Best Crochet in the Creative Arts department.

◊Lori Grubbs of Rose Bud received a Best of Show ribbon and an assortment of Leisure Arts products for Best Knitting in the Creative Arts department.

◊Jean Harvell of Melbourne received a Best of Show ribbon and an assortment of Leisure Arts products for Best General Crafts in the Creative Arts department.

◊Judith Metz of Ash Flat received a Mountain Mist Award Best of Show Award. She also received a quilt batt from the company for her first-place quilt.

◊Bettie Lee Vincent of Heber Springs received a quilt batt from Fairfield Processing Corp, makers of Poly-Fil brand product, for her first-place quilt.

◊Evelyn Eades of Bee Branch received a quilt batt from Fairfield Processing Corp, makers of Poly-Fil brand product, for her first-place quilt.

◊Phyllis Young of Shirley received a quilt batt from Fairfield Processing Corp, makers of Poly-Fil brand product, for her first-place quilt.

◊Sharon Williams received a quilt batt from Fairfield Processing Corp, makers of Poly-Fil brand product, for her firstplace quilt.

◊Marilyn Hines of Camp (Fulton County), received$25 from Northwest Arkansas Handweavers Guild for the Best of Show in handweaving.

◊Janice Wise of Pangburn received $25 from Arkansas Farm Bureau for Best Dried Food.

◊Diane Sushinsky of Salem (Fulton County) received $25 from Arkansas Farm Bureau for Best Fruit. She also received the Linda J. Amendt Award for the Most Outstanding Exhibit in Preserved Foods.

◊Three Rivers area residents receiving Best of Show ribbons in the open division of Creative Arts include: Opal Tester of Clinton, clothing; Kathy Mason of Heber Springs, original design; Jean Harvell of Melbourne, crewel embroidery, counted cross stitch and embellished item; Pat Erwin of Horseshoe Bend, beading; and Gwen Townsend of Bald Knob, pencil. Receiving Best of Show ribbons in the junior division of Creative Arts were Krystal Noogle of Searcy, creative stitchery; Shelby M. Brokaw of Sage, horticulture; and Mackenzie Martin of Salem, honey. Winning Best of Show ribbons in the youth division of Creative Arts were David Brister of Searcy, building kits; Lane Hall of Glencoe (Fulton County), acrylic art; and Madison Brokaw of Sage, general horticulture.

◊Tyler Cunningham of Calico Rock showed the Grand Champion Female in the Open Santa Gertrudis Cattle Show. Cunningham also showed the Reserve Champion Female in the Junior Santa Gertrudis Cattle Show.

◊Thomas Casey of Searcy showed the Grand Champion Bull and Arkansas Champion Bull in the Open Santa Gertrudis Cattle Show.

◊Brittany Kunkel of Poughkeepsie showed the Reserve Grand Champion Bull in the Open Santa Gertrudis Cattle Show.

◊Trenton Morgan showedthe Champion Bull in the Junior Santa Gertrudis Cattle Show.

◊Brandon Draper of Cave City showed the Reserve Champion Bull in the Junior Beefmaster Cattle Show.

◊Makhala Butler of Cabot showed the Junior Reserve Champion and the Senior Grand Champion in the Lamancha class of the Junior Dairy Goat Show.

◊Theresa Skeens of Jacksonville showed the Senior Reserve Grand Champion, Recorded Grade; Senior Grand Champion and Reserve Senior Grand Champion, Nubian; and Senior Grand Champion, Toggenburg, in the Junior Dairy Goat Show.

◊Mark H. Butler II of Cabot showed the Reserve Grand Champion, Alpine, in the Junior Dairy Goat Show.

◊Whittany Dockins of Dolph (Izard County) showed the Champion Female in the Junior Gelbvieh Cattle Show.

◊Zack Tate of Evening Shade showed the Reserve Champion Bull in the Junior Gelbvieh Cattle Show.

◊Derrick Green of Pleasant Plains showed the Reserve Champion Bull in the Junior All Other Breeds Cattle Show.

◊Kelby Wiles of Melbourne showed the Reserve Champion Female in the Junior Saler Cattle Show.

◊Carey Robertson of Bradford showed the Grand Champion Ram, Arkansas Ram and Reserve Grand Champion Ram in the Open KatahdinSheep Show.

◊Amber Martin of Judsonia showed the Reserve Grand Champion Bull in the Open Hereford Cattle Show.

◊Leigh Ann Bridgers of Cave City showed the Reserve Grand Champion Bull in the Open Shorthorn Cattle Show.

◊Participating in the Junior Livestock Auction were Three Rivers residents Ty Lester of Quitman, who received $750 from Arkansas Farm Bureau for a market hog; Austin Lester of Quitman, who received $600 from Arkansas Farm Bureau for a market hog; Sarah Caldwell of Rose Bud, who received $700 from Arkansas Farm Bureau for a market hog; and Lacey Yingling of Judsonia, who received $650 from Arkansas Farm Bureau for a market hog.

◊Sarah Pease, 19-year-old daughter of Terry and Linda Pease of Batesville, was third runner-up in the 2007 Arkansas State Fair Queen contest. She is a sophomore at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville.
