Car race kills driver, sends five to hospital, LR police say

— A two-vehicle accident Sunday evening that left a Little Rock man dead and a woman and four children injured was the result of racing, according to Little Rock police.

Joe Lee Smith, 40, was driving south on Geyer Springs Road when his 1990 Mazda crossed the center line and struck a 1996 Mercury head-on near the intersection of Geyer Springs and Palo Alto Drive around 7 p.m., the Arkansas State Police reported. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crystal McGrudder, 24, driver of the Mercury, and passengers Mishawn Marbley, 4; Dershawna Marbley, 3; Saimiyah Marbley, 5; and Marcus Marbley, 1, all of Little Rock, were injured and taken to area hospitals.

Mishawn Marbley was listed in fair condition Monday with a head injury at Arkansas Children's Hospital, a hospital spokesman said. The other children were being treated fornonlife-threatening injuries and were expected to be released. Attempts to obtain information on McGrudder were unsuccessful.

Police said Smith was racing another car south on Geyer Springs at the time of the accident.
