"Stargate: Atlantis" is returning to the Sci Fi Channel for a fifth season.

That robust cheer is coming from the loud and noble geek section of the peanut gallery, reports Michael Storey in Thursday's Style section.

It's for the news from Sci Fi Channel that "Stargate: Atlantis" has been renewed for a fifth season.

That means at least 20 more episodes for the "Stargate SG-1" spin-off. The series enjoys cultlike status among the cognoscenti.

You know the premise. There are all these alien devices called Stargates scattered about that allow interstellar zipping between galaxies. Aliens are encountered; adventures ensue.

In this series, the humans are exploring the lost city of Atlantis which, as we all know, is in the Pegasus galaxy. The current season airs at 9 p.m. Fridays and features two new cast members: Amanda Tapping has moved over from "SG-1"and Jewel Staite, who played Kaylee Frye on "Firefly."
