Tornadoes rip state, kill 13

A series of tornadoes tore through Arkansas on Tuesday, killing at least 13 people and leading to reports of widespread damage in at least nine counties.

The tornadoes knocked down houses, power lines and trees, tore off roofs and caused gas leaks. Renee Preslar, the Public Education Coordinator with the Department of Emergency Management said four people died in Pope County, three people in Izard, one in Stone, two in Conway, one in Baxter and 2 in Van Buren counties.

By 8 p.m., Pope, Van Buren and Baxter counties in Arkansas were believed to be among the hardest hit.

The number of deaths and injuries wasn't immediately available as authorities scrambled to assess the damage.
