McCain directs his attention to fall run

On his first full day as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, John McCain made the case that he is the candidate best equipped to lead the fight against al-Qaida, and said he is "proud to carry the banner of a conservative Republican."

Meanwhile, Hillary Rodham Clinton told roaring partisans that she's the candidate of "dreams and practicality," Barack Obama rallied supporters in Seattle and Mike Huckabee campaigned in Kansas as if he hadn't heard the Republican race is supposed to be over.

So go the efforts to win five Democratic and three Republican presidential nomination contests this weekend.

Suspense drained from the Republican side when Mitt Romney suspended his campaign Thursday. That left McCain the prohibitive favorite, and President Bush on Friday nudged conservatives to unite behind the nominee.
