A former police officer, fired after he became the target of a child-pornography investigation, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years, 8 months in federal prison after entering a guilty plea five months ago to a charge of distributing child pornography through his home computer.

Jeremy Boyd Grammer, 31, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jimm Larry Hendren, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Robert C. Balfe. Hendren's sentence also calls for Grammer to remain under court supervision for the rest of his life, after his release from prison, and requires Grammer to pay a $40,000 fine, the release said.

According to Balfe, federal immigration officials in Cleveland contacted their counterparts in Fayetteville in March 2007 about an investigation into an online child pornography case. Grammer's home was searched April 25, and he was fired from the Fayetteville Police Department the next day.

Grammer served as a patrol officer and a K-9 officer before becoming a detective. He also was a member of the department's Emergency Response Team.
