50 YEARS AGO May 18, 1958 RUSSELLVILLE - A father and son were wounded on the streets of nearby Dover last night, and the school superintendent has admitted shooting them, Sheriff Terrell Bishop reported. Newton Powers and his 16-year-old son, Troy, were taken to a hospital here, each suffering from bullet wounds in the abdomen. Young Powers was expelled from Dover High School several weeks ago after an outbreak of vandalism there, the sheriff said.

25 YEARS AGO May 18, 1983

Pulaski County Municipal Judge David Hale became irritated at a hearing today that county officials had failed to reach an agreement for paying W.H. "Sonny" Dillahunty for his services as special prosecutor in the Alice McArthur slaying case. David P. Henry, representing County Judge Don Venhaus, contended that the only provision in state law for paying a special prosecutor provides for the state, not the county, to pay $40 to him. Dillahunty has asked for $16,125.

10 YEARS AGO May 18, 1998 BIRMINGHAM - Entering this week's SEC Tournament Arkansas' season teetered on "over." Despite losing 7-5 to Auburn in Sunday's championship game, the belief in Birmingham is the Razorbacks have earned at least another week of play. Arkansas is one of six SEC teams expected to receive NCAA regional bids when they're announced on ESPN at 2 p.m. today.
