Southern focus

Hot off the press, Fodor's In Focus: Savannah & Charleston is a compact guide to two of the South's most charming cities. It begins where Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil leaves off, in the historic district of Savannah, Ga. Starting with a one-page summary of Savannah's history and a one-page walking map, this guide whisks you through two dozen of the top spots to see, followed by a dozen places to eat and a dozen places to stay. Shopping, nightlife, the arts and practical travel matters are also tended to in quick order. Should this repast prove too skimpy, a subsequent chapter sets the table for visitors to six of Georgia's coastal islands, including Jekyll Island. Meanwhile, historic Charleston, S.C., receives similar attention, although the coverage of its dining and lodging options is more extensive. The pleasures of Charleston are extended seaward, too, with a chapter devoted to nearby Hilton Head.
