Junior Achievement hails Mack McLarty, Sheffield Nelson for efforts to prepare kids for global economy

— Junior Achievement of Arkansas honored two of its early board members at a business luncheon Monday at the Statehouse Convention Center. The organization has programs presented by volunteers fromthe business community to teach schoolchildren in class and after class "to be competitive in a global economy and to be able to adapt to this new world," according to Mack McLarty. "The students willbe more self-confident, prepared and have the right value system."

"Its first year, they had 535 students and this year there are 14,000," Sheffield Nelson said.

Students are in kindergarten through the 12th grade.

Walter Hussman presented the first Legacy Awards to Nelson and McLarty. Drawings of the two honorees by students at The Anthony School were presented by fellow student Jackson Collier. The winning drawings of the honorees were made by Jim Stobaugh and Mia Waymack.

The presenting sponsor for the luncheon was Merrill Lynch. Richard Johnson is chairman of the Junior Achievement board of directors.
