— At 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918, fighting

stopped in World War I.

It was a symbolic day, the 11th hour of the

11th day of the 11th month, the day an ar

mistice was signed to end the Great War, the

War to End All Wars.

The following year, President Woodrow

Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 Armistice Day

with the words: "To us in America, the reflec

tions of Armistice Day will be filled with sol

emn pride in the heroism of those who died

in the county's service and with gratitude for

the victory, both because of the thing from

which it has freed us and because of the op

portunity it has given America to show her

sympathy with peace and justice." But history did not allow World War I its

intended place as America's last war, and on

June 1, 1954, Armistice Day became Veterans

Day, a day to honor American veterans of

all wars.

Today, as The Great War's last surviving

veteran and an ever-decreasing group of

World War II veterans still walk among us,

they are joined by veterans from the Korea

War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm and our sol

diers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. They

join a select group of those who fought for

America, veterans of the American Revolu

tion, War of 1812, Mexican-American War,

Civil War and Spanish-American War.
