Memphian accused of firing shot at HSU student

ARKADELPHIA — A Tennessee man is being held on suspicion of firing a shot at students near Henderson State University, police said Thursday.

Brandon Yarbrough, 23, of Memphis faces felony charges of aggravated assault and making terroristic threats after the Wednesday shooting on a Ouachita Baptist University parking lot, police said. Yarbrough was being held Thursday at the Clark County jail, pending a bond hearing Friday.

Police said two others arrested in connection with the shooting were released after being questioned.

Detectives said Yarbrough and the others were waiting for the intended victim to return to a Henderson State dormitory. Police said they found a .380-caliber pistol they believe Yarbrough used in the shooting.

Criminal investigators are "still trying to put it altogether," Sgt. Harley Hillery told the Daily Siftings Herald newspaper. "There's going to be a lot more to it than what the original information was."

Henderson State University President Charles Welch said he wanted to "reassure faculty, staff, students and the community that the campus is safe" after the shooting. It comes after an October shooting at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway left two students dead and wounded another man.
