Adult education classes available in Jackson County
ADVERSTISMENT
JACKSON COUNTY - Free Adult Education classes are available to adults in Jackson County that can help people who do not have a high school diploma earn their GED. Approximately 34 percent of Jackson County adults over the age of 25 do not have a high school diploma, according to 2000 U.S. Census figures. Students may enroll at any time at any one of several locations in Jackson County.
Those locations and times are: ASU-Newport from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; Village Mall from 1-4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; Branch Community Center from 4:30-6 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; Upper Room Church of God in Diaz from 1-3 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; Swifton Housing Authority from 8 a.m. to noon Monday and Tuesday.
In addition, literacy instruction for low-level and nonreaders is available on the ASU-Newport campus from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and the Village Mall from 1-3 p.m. Monday and Wednesday.
English as a Second Language classes are available on the ASU-Newport campus from from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. All instruction and materials are free.
The tests of General Educational Development are internationally recognized. The GED tests battery includes subject area tests in language arts, writing, social studies, science, language arts, reading and mathematics. GED tests are offered in English, Spanish and French and are free of charge.
The two-part GED test will be given on the following Tuesdays and Wednesdays at ASU-Newport: Oct. 7 and 8, Oct. 21 and 22, Nov. 4 and 5, Nov.18 and 19 and Dec. 9 and 10. Test takers should contact the Adult Education Department to determine eligibility.
