Billy Ray Smith Jr. named honorary captain for Alabama game

The University of Arkansas announced Wednesday that Billy Ray Smith Jr., a holder of the Razorback record for most career takes for loss, has been named the Old Spice/Egg-Land's Best Eggs honorary captain for the Hogs' game against Alabama Saturday.

Smith, a two time All-American, earned 299 career tackles and 62 career tackles for loss, according to a press release from Razorback Media Relations. The 1982 team captain has been named to the Arkansas all-decade team and the Arkansas all-century team. He is also a member of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, the Razorback Hall of Honor and the College Football Hall of Fame, the release said.

Smith was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 1983 as the fifth pick of the first round. He was the Chargers team MVP in 1987 and the defensive player of the year in '85 and '86, according to the release.

The university plans to name an honorary captain for each game this season. The honorary captain is expected to appear at the Legends Tent before the game, accompany the Razorback captains to midfield for the coin toss and be announced on the field prior to the game.

The Razorback game against Alabama is scheduled to begin Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and be broadcast on the SEC regional broadcast provided by Raycom Sports.
