NCAA clears Auburn of academic fraud

— Auburn has been cleared of academic fraud by the NCAA and will not face penalties.

The Birmingham News reported Friday the results of an NCAA investigation into claims that professors were helping football players and other athletes stay eligiblein 2005 and 2006 through directed-reading courses, which allow students to avoid classroom time.

The NCAA said the school did commit secondary violations involving student-athletes who took those courses when they no longer had eligibility.

The NCAA submitted its findings to Auburn on Aug. 28 and the newspaper obtained them under an open records request.

An internal investigation in 2006 found that the problems were limited to two professors.

Arkansas faces Auburn on Oct. 11 in Alabama.
