UA track and field sanctions upheld

The NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee denied the appeal of sanctions against the University of Arkansas track and field program, according to a university news release.

The original infractions report was issued by the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions Oct. 25, 2007. The University argued in its appeal that the penalties assigned were "excessive and inappropriate."

The university was directed to seek a clarification of the way a "vacation of points" should be calculated from the NCAA committee responsible for scoring track and field events, the release said.

"Obviously, I am disappointed in the decision of the Appeals Committee," former Arkansas head track and field coach John McDonnell said in the release.

University officials were seeking a reduction in the length of the probationary period, which they considered excessive, and they wanted the "self-imposed probation" to be counted toward the penalties, according to the release.
