The top things to do and places to be

— 1. ARRESTING ARTIFACTS "Badges, Bandits and Bars: Arkansas Law & Justice," an exploration of the state's history of crime and punishment from preterritorial days to the mid-1980s, goes on display Friday at the Old State House Museum, 300 W. Markham St., Little Rock.

The exhibit, which will remain on display through March 6, 2011, features artifacts and photographs from the Arkansas State Police and the Arkansas Department of Correction: the winter uniform coat of the Arkansas State Police's first superintendent, A.G. Albright; improvised weapons confiscated from prison inmates; dice the State Police seized in gambling raids; an image of Al Capone relaxing with fellow gangsters in Hot Springs; a portrait of outlaw Cherokee Bill, convicted of murder in "Hanging Judge" Isaac Parker's federal court in Fort Smith; and Judge Parker's gavel, on loan from the Fort Smith National Historic Site. 2 Chill time

3 Mystery man

In the current Arkansas Repertory Theatre production, Steve Wilkerson portrays The Elephant Man, who has Proteus syndrome, in Bernard Pomerance's play of the same name. Joseph Graves plays the doctor who is determined to see what makes Wilkerson's character tick. The play is being staged at Wildwood Park for the Arts, 20919 Denny Road, Little Rock, and it opens Friday night, continuing nightly (except Mondays and Tuesdays) through May 10. 4 Starry nights

Leonard Nimoy can do more than just attach prosthetic ears to his head. He has written Vincent, a one-man play about the life of the tortured artist, Vincent van Gogh, and the show will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at The Weekend Theater, West Seventh and Chester streets, Little Rock. Tom McLeod will portray Vincent (1853-1890), who sold only one of his paintings while he was alive. Tickets are $14, $10 for students and senior citizens age 65 and older. 5 Rail transport

Fordyce celebrates its railroad heritage with the 29th annual Fordyce on the Cotton Belt Festival, culminating Friday and Saturday in the Dallas County seat's downtown. Among the highlights: the Festival Parade at 11 a.m.; performances by Nashville Star winner Erika Jo Heriges at 1 and 3:15 p.m. on the courthouse square; and the Redbug Reunion Rally ($15) at 5 p.m. Friday in the Civic Center. 6 Blowing winds

The Little Rock Wind Symphony will go "Around the World in 90 Minutes" in a concert at 7:30 p.m. today at Second Presbyterian Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock. Wind Symphony clarinetist Robert Anderson, who teaches woodwinds at Hendrix College, will be the soloist in the Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major by Carl Maria von Weber. The program will also include the Overture to Candide by Leonard Bernstein; Irish Tune From County Derry by Percy Grainger; El Capitan by John Philip Sousa; Petite Symphonie by Charles Gounod; Florentiner by Julius Fucik; Vientos y Tangos by Michael Gandolfi; and An American in Paris by George Gershwin. 7 Flowering festivity

Wildwood Park for the Arts' woodland azaleas will be on display for Wildwood's second annual "Blooms" festival, 10 a.m.6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday at the park, 20919 Denny Road, Little Rock. The event will include interactive children's activities, horticultural tours and gardening advice, music, maypole dances and entertainment.
