NLR looks to replace sunken Salty Parrot

North Little Rock isn't close to any deal but remains open to acquiring a barge from federal government surplus to replace the Salty Parrot that sank in March.

The Salty Parrot was home to a restaurant for the privatelyowned Arkansas Queen riverboat and moored within the city-funded Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum complex on the Arkansas River downtown. The barge sank March 26 and was later scrapped.

The museum has had preliminary discussions with the U.S. Corps of Engineers about a vessel named the Thompson, now in Wisconsin. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, museum director Greg Zonner said.

"They're trying to find a museum for it to go to," Zonner said."I have called them about finding a replacement for the Salty Parrot. We've just started looking at it, though. Right now I don't even know if it would fit. But you always try to keep your eyes open."

The museum never added a Corps' motor vessel, the Lipscomb, that the North Little Rock City Council authorized the city to obtain in early 2007. The city had agreed to spend up to $75,000 to upgrade its mooring facilities to accommodate the boat.

"The Corps is still using it," Zonner said of the Lipscomb. "We never did figure out if that would fit here or not. We let that one get away."
