Arts Center gives annual report

Museum acquired 109 works, had 300,000 visitors in past year

— The Arkansas Arts Center acquired 109 works during the 2008-09 fiscal year, including 66 drawings, five paintings and 31 works of contemporary craft, the center's board of trustees learned Monday.

During the board's annual meeting, the center's Executive Director Nan Plummer said the center finished its fiscal year ending June 30 with a balance of $3,907 and had revenue totaling $6.16 million. The original budget was reduced by about $500,000 through leaving vacant positions unfilled and a 10 percent furlough for both salaried and hourly employees.

During the year, about 300,000 people visited the center to see the permanent collection as well as six drawing exhibitions, five contemporary craft shows, five juried regional shows and six exhibitions of painting, video and photography.

New board members appointed by the Little Rock Board of Directors include Chucki Bradbury, John Fletcher, Marla Johnson Norris, Terri Snowden, Dr. Richardo Sotomora and Mary Ellen Vanglider.

Bobby Tucker is board chairman and Belinda Shults is president. Other officers are Bob Birch, vice president, Vanglider, treasurer, and Cindy Feltus, secretary.

The Winthrop Rockefeller award was given to Louise and Fred Dierks of Hot Springs who have loaned many works of art to the center and have been "supporters of the Arts Center since before such records were kept," Plummer said. The award is given each year to honor people who support the center "beyond the normal call of duty," she said.
