Cool weekend sets record NLR lows

— Thanks to cold air blowing in from the north, the temperature in North Little Rock fell to record lows on Sunday and Monday, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in North Little Rock said Monday.

The low today could also set a record, said Sean Clark.

On Sunday morning, the low temperature measured at the North Little Rock Municipal Airport was 61 degrees, the lowest temperature measured at the airport on that day since the Weather Service began tracking the temperature at the airport in 1976. The previous record for that day was 64 degrees, which had been set in 1997.

On Monday, the low was 60, compared with a previous record of 63 degrees set in 1984.

Clark said the cool temperatures were being caused by a "trough," or low pressure area, allowing cool, dry winds to blow into the state from the Dakotas and Canada. Later in the week, temperatures are expected to rise as warmer, more humid winds from the south return.
