McDaniel to talk desegregation settlement with lawmakers

— Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel is talking with lawmakers about his proposal to phase out the roughly $60 million a year the state gives in desegregation funding to three school districts.

McDaniel planned to appear before a legislative panel Tuesday morning to talk about the desegregation case. The appearance comes a week after McDaniel sent a letter to the Little Rock, North Little Rock and Pulaski County Special school districts suggesting an agreement to end the desegregation funding to the districts over the next seven years.

A federal appeals court ruled earlier this year that Little Rock's school had successfully desegregated, while North Little Rock and Pulaski County district are seeking to be declared unitary, or substantially desegregated, by a federal judge.

Arkansas has paid more than $845 million to the three school districts through a 1989 settlement agreement.
