— 100 YEARS AGO Aug. 25, 1909

The demand of the city that the Iron Mountain railroad take over and keep in repair its portion of the West Third street viaduct has been conveyed to the attorneys and officers of the railroad by City Attorney W.B. Brooks, following an order from Mayor Duley that the railroad be notified to repair the viaduct. A reply from the attorneys of the system is expected in about 10 days. The position of the city in the viaduct maintenance controversy is being seriously considered by the railroad.

50 YEARS AGO Aug. 25, 1959

An estimated 17,000 elementary and junior high school students began registering today for the first time under the 1959 pupil placement act. Registration continues through Friday with classes beginning Sept. 8. Junior high and elementary pupils who were in Little Rock district schools last year are already assigned according to the schools which they attended last year, but each must fill out the registration form.

25 YEARS AGO Aug. 25, 1984

The Public Service Commission has closed the $70.8 million rate case that Arkansas Power & Light Co. recently asked to withdraw, at the same time granting its staff's request to open a new hearing for the possible purpose of reducing AP&L's rates. The PSC staff recently asked the commission to open a new AP&L case so that it could present testimony indicating that AP&L's rates should be lowered. The staff has made no formal recommendation in the new case; however, it recommended a $22 million rate reduction in AP&L's $70.8 million case.

10 YEARS AGO Aug. 25, 1999

The state Department of Education will use a $368,000 federal grant to raise public awareness of charter school opportunities and give technical assistance to people who want to start a school. The grant from the federal Department of Education was awarded to help the state help those who want to open charter schools. The funds will be used to support planning and preparing applications for the schools, department spokesman Charles Watson said.
