— QB Stegall walks on at Mississippi State

Former Greenwood High School quarterback Daniel Stegall, who spent four years in the New York Mets organization before being released this summer, will walk on as a quarterback at Mississippi State, according to The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson, Miss.

Stegall, 6-3, 185 pounds, had orally committed to Arkansas State in 2005 before switching to Miami. He played on state championship teams in football and baseball at Greenwood before being selected by the Mets in the seventh round of Major League Baseball's amateur draft and opting to play baseball.

Stegall did not return a phone message Monday evening.

Stallings to speak in Jonesboro

Former Alabama Coach Gene Stallings will be the featured speaker at the annual ASU Touchdown Club banquet today at the Holiday Inn in Jonesboro.

Stallings also played and coached for Paul "Bear" Bryant at Alabama and coached in the NFL, including 14 seasons as an assistant to Tom Landry with the Dallas Cowboys.

SOCCER Arkansas' Anders gets defensive honor

Arkansas' Kailey Anders has been named the SEC defensive player of the week following the Razorbacks 2-0 victory over Michigan on Friday. Anders helped limit Michigan to eight shots, including five on goal, and scored the team's first goal.
