Power plant opponents file new objection

Two environmental groups have filed a new request to state regulators asking them to stop construction of a coal-fired power plant in southwest Arkansas.

The Sierra Club and National Audubon Society filed the request Wednesday to the Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology Commission. In it, the groups claim a decision by federal regulators over a Kentucky power plant shows the planned $1.6 billion coal-fired plant in Hempstead County would violate the federal Clean Air Act.

It is unclear when the commission will address the request. Southwestern Electric Power Co., a subsidiary of Columbus, Ohio-based American Electric Power, wants to build the power plant.
