Cotter mayor cites health, resigns post

— First-term Cotter Mayor David McNair submitted his resignation Wednesday.

In a one-sentence letter, McNair cited "health reasons" for leaving office in the Baxter County town of 921 residents. He said his resignation is effective immediately.

McNair was elected to a fouryear term in 2006, winning 68 percent of the vote.

City Attorney Roger Morgan said the Cotter City Council must act on the mayoral vacancy at its next meeting, which is today.

Morgan said the council has two options - appoint someone to serve the remainder of McNair's term, or set a date for a special election.

McNair is the second mayor in Baxter County to tender his resignation this month. Briarcliff Mayor Ericke Eckert cited personal reasons for his resignation. The Briarcliff City Council will address the vacancy at its Sept. 12 meeting.
