— GOLF Vinson, Abinante take first-round leads

Batesville's John Vinson shot a 3-under-par 67 Friday and leads after the first round of the Arkansas State Golf Association's Senior Stroke Play at Greystone Country Club's Cypress Creek course in Cabot.

Vinson leads by one stroke over Conway's Paul Jenson, who shot 2-under-par 70, and two shots over Hot Springs Village's Oscar Taylor, who shot 1-under-71. Taylor is trying to sweep the ASGA state tournaments this year, having already won the ASGA Match Play.

Hot Springs Village's Charles Abinante shot the low round of the day with a 5-under 67 to lead the super senior division. Players in the super senior division do not compete against those in the senior division.

Abinante leads Little Rock's Glenn Hickey by two strokes going into today's second round. The final round will be played Sunday.

Freshman Jasmine Norton led Arkansas with 23 kills, but the Razorbacks lost their season opener 26-24, 17-25, 26-24, 23-25, 15-12 to TCU in the TCU Invitational on Friday in Fort Worth.

Phoebe Bautista had a team-high 29 digs for Arkansas.

UALR falls in season opener to McNeese State

UALR got 18 kills from Anita Bucur, but fell 25-15, 24-26, 25-17, 25-17 to McNeese State on Friday in the Mississippi State Maroon Classic.

The Trojans (0-1) got 17 assists from Giuliana De Francesco and 17 digs from Emily Pepperman.

Lyon's Beineke tops 1,000 kills

Lyon senior middle blocker Katie Beineke became the third player in school history to total 1,000 kills Friday with six in a 25-17, 25-17, 25-14 loss to College of the Ozarks in the Pipers' season opener in the Oklahoma City University Tournament in Oklahoma City.

The senior from Jonesboro, who also had two blocks, has 1,001 career kills. Julie Arnold added 22 assists and Crystal Bain had 10 digs to lead the Pipers.

MOTOR SPORTS MSRA late models return to I-30

The O'Reilly Mid-South Racing Series will make its final visit to central Arkansas tonight when it races at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway.

Heading into the event, Billy Moyer Jr. of Batesville continues to lead the series points standings, holding an 87-point advantage over Trumann's Kyle Beard. Jeff Floyd of Walnut Ridge is third, 97 points behind Moyer.

The track's winged sprint car, IMCA modified, super stock and minisprint divisions will also race.

Adult grandstand admission is $20. Children 6-12 get in for $2. Pit passes are $30. Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m.

Razorbacks score four in second half to win

Arkansas scored four goals in the second half Friday to rally past Air Force in the Razorbacks' home opener in Fayetteville in the Razorback Adidas Classic.

The Razorbacks (2-0) fell behind 1-0 before Sophie Wentz scored the first of her two goals to tie it in the 47th minute. After Lauren Hallauer tied it again at 2-2 in the 56th minute, Wentz gave Arkansas the lead for good in the 57th minute. Kim Schleif added the final goal.

Central Arkansas shuts out Prairie View A&M

Cori Kaplinger and Carissa Rossi scored for Central Arkansas (1-1) as the women's team won 2-0 Friday over Prairie View A&M in Prairie View, Texas.

Shutouts earned by John Brown's teams

John Brown's women's team beat Bacone (Okla.) 11-0 on Friday, starting with a goal by Amanda Reed in the sixth minute. The women's team (1-0) scored six more goals in the first half, including two by Sarah Kidd.

John Brown's men's team won 2-0 over Bacone on a penalty kick by Gabriel Duarte in the ninth minute, and goal by Sasha Viatrov in the 74th minute.
