Six Arkansans killed in roadway accidents

— Four crashes on state roadways since Tuesday claimed six lives, Arkansas State Police reported.

Tuesday, about 8:57 p.m., Tommy Emory, 51, of Tuckerman was northbound on Arkansas 67 north of Newport when he crossed the centerline and struck the southbound car of James Gatlin, 63, of Alton, Mo., state police reported.

Emory was pronounced dead at the scene. Gatlin was injured and taken to Harris Hospital. Information on his condition was unavailable.

Wednesday, Jimmy Rice, 61, of Dardanelle was southbound on Arkansas 27, north of Katydid Lane, in Yell County, when he struck a culvert to the west of the road about 9:50 a.m., state police reported.

He was taken to UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock, where he was pronounced dead at 4:50 p.m., police said.

Thursday, Melanie Brown, 25, of Batesville died after she drove her Jeep Cherokee off an embankment, sending it airborne southof the White River Bridge in Independence County, according to state police.

Brown was traveling southbound on Arkansas 167 when her sport utility vehicle crossed both northbound lanes and ran off the road's east side, according to the state police report.

After falling from the embankment, the Cherokee landed in a field, overturned a few times and ejected Brown, police said. Details and the time of the accident are still under investigation, police said.

Brittney Givens, 19, Lauren Gilmore, 18, and Shernell King, 19, all of Little Rock died Friday when the Toyota Corolla they were traveling in crashed about 11 a.m. in Saline County, state police report.

Mikayla Hampton, 18, also of Little Rock, was driving the car eastbound on Interstate 30, when it left the road, "coming to rest in the woods," state police said.

Hampton was taken to Saline Memorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Information on her condition was unavailable.
