Elkins PD adding drug dog to force

— Chief John Williams recently went before the City Council to request funds for a drug dog.

Williams said a three-year-old Belgium Malinois, which could cost $5,000, would be given to the Elkins Police Department by Westville, Okla., Police Chief Jarrod Brown because the handler had quit the Westville force.

"All they are asking is $500 for the equipment that goes with the dog," Williams said.

He said the dog had an allergy problem, but he had talked to a veterinarian and was told it wasn't that bad and was controlled with special food that would run about $85 per month.

"I believe it will pay for itself," Alderman Bonnie Wilcox said. "If anyone thinks Elkins doesn't have drugs, they need to think again."

Williams confirmed this saying the department had recently had a drug bust and seized 3 to 4 grams of crystal meth within the city limits.

Williams said Officer Mike Ball will be the dog's handler.

Sunny Ledford, recorder/treasurer, asked if the officer would have to be paid extra for handling the dog.

City Attorney Danny Wright said the officer would get an additional one hour a day for caring for the dog.

Williams was asked about the dog getting used to another handler.

Williams said the dog and its handler, Ball, would go through training together although the dog had been previously trained.

"If it has been with only one owner, it is usually not a problem," he said.

After further discussion on the cost, finances and whether the canine's cage could be modified to fit into any vehicle, the council voted to authorize the chief to use up to $2,000 in the police budget to cover expenses to acquire the dog and its equipment. The motion passed 6-0.
