— 100 YEARS AGO Aug. 31, 1909

A detailed crop report, which allows a decrease in the cotton crop in 49 out of 50 cotton-raising counties of the state, and a decrease in the corn crop in 54 counties, was issued yesterday by State Commissioner of Agriculture Guy B. Tucker. The report shows that the cotton crop in 14 counties will not amount to more than 50 percent of the crop of last year.

50 YEARS AGO Aug. 31, 1959

Governor Faubus today warned school forces that they are in danger of killing the property tax equalization program if they fail to reduce millage rates as assessments go up. The governor praised efforts of the assessment coordination department in putting the program in good shape. But he said it was still in danger because of the attitude of some school boards.

25 YEARS AGO Aug. 31, 1984

If the state doesn't do something soon to resolve the uncertainty surrounding electric rates in Arkansas, this week's layoff of 225 workers at an aluminum plant near Malvern may be only a "harbinger of things to come," a professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock said Thursday. Dr. Frank Troutman of UALR's Industrial Research and Extension Center said the state should think twice about wanting to get out of paying for the Grand Gulf nuclear power plant now under construction in Mississippi.

A breakdown in communication among employees of the Children and Family Services Division led to the agency's $7 million shortfall, Department of Human Services officials said Monday. "It was one hand not knowing what the other hand was doing," department Director Kurt Knickrehm said at a meeting called to study the division's budget situation. Employees who made contracts for the division were not in tune with employees who keep track of the finances, Knickrehm said, resulting in the division contracting for more services than it could afford.
