John Pelphrey got the best of former college teammate Sean Woods on Saturday. In doing so, Pelphrey’s Arkansas Razorbacks also snapped a four-game losing streak.

Using a balanced attack with 11 players finishing in the scoring column, Arkansas defeated Mississippi Valley State 91-54. The game matched two former University of Kentucky teammates against each other as coaches, as Pelphrey and Woods played on the Wildcats’ team of the early 1990s dubbed “The Unforgettables.”

“We made a little progress,” Pelphrey said of the Razorbacks’ victory. “But we obviously still need to get better.”

Arkansas (3-5) had lost consecutive home games to Morgan State, East Tennessee State and South Alabama, and a road game at Oklahoma before Saturday. But against the Delta Devils (1-7), the Razorbacks had little problem, shooting 51.6 percent from the floor while outrebounding Mississippi Valley State, 45-28.

It marked the first time since their season opener against Alcorn State that the Razorbacks won the rebound battle.

“Obviously today we did a better job (rebounding),” Pelphrey said. “We’re still a long ways off, but this was a step in the right direction.”

Jemal Farmer led the Razorbacks with 18 points, while Marshawn Powell and Stefan Welsh added 15 each. Arkansas’ leading scorer coming into the game, Rotnei Clarke, was held to a season-low five points.

“We did exactly what we wanted to do,” Woods said. “We shut down Clarke and didn’t let big Mike Washington (8 points) hurt us inside. But Arkansas had some other guys step up.”

Tashan Newsome led Mississippi Valley with 17 points. Jason Holmes added 13.
