School seeks to avoid consolidation

The superintendent of the Deer-Mount Judea School District in Newton County has a plan to avoid the possibility of consolidation.

Richard Denniston told state lawmakers Monday that the proposal calls for the neighboring Jasper district to give up some of its territory and students. It also calls for more supplemental funding from the state to both districts.

The Deer-Mount Judea district currently has 377 students. State law requires districts with fewer than 350 students to consolidate.

The Jasper School Board, the state Board of Education and the Legislature each would have to approve various parts of the proposal.
