A former Arkansas Farm Bureau President who announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate last week is withdrawing from the race because of health reasons.
Republican Stanley Reed discontinued his campaign after undergoing medical tests related to unspecified health issues over the last two days, officials said in a statement.
"This was a tough decision, but it's the right one," Reed said in the statement. "I want to thank those who have been so supportive over the past three months as I weighed the decision to get in the race. And though I had only a been a candidate for a week, I've been heartened by the incredible show of support. I'm especially appreciative to those who set out with me on this trek."
The campaign intends to refund all donations made to it.
Reed last Thursday became the eighth Republican to announce he would challenge U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., in 2010. The 58-year-old is a former supporter of Lincoln who made public in October that he was thinking about the race.
Reed is a Marianna farmer and is a past chairman of the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees.
