PINE BLUFF The Internal Revenue Service is auditing the city of Pine Bluff over its 2007 payroll and independent contractor taxes.
The IRS says its preliminary assessment indicates the city owes $63,803 to the federal government. The discrepancy is due to differences in requirements for uniforms, travel and car allowances.
City finance director Steve Miller says that after additional paperwork is submitted, the city will be responsible for about $51,700.
The IRS findings will be paid for through the city’s gas franchise fee. A change in the way Centerpoint Energy pays that fee will result in about $275,000 extra in one-time income for the city.
Among its findings, the IRS says employees such as Weed and Seed tutors and office contract workers should have been categorized as employees instead of independent contractors.
