Arkansas House speaker names committee leaders

— Representatives Bill Abernathy, Steve Harrelson, John Lowery, Bill Sample and Robert Moore will serve as chairmen of high-profile House committees this legislative session.

House Speaker Robbie Wills, D-Conway, announced the appointments during the House's opening session Monday.

Abernathy, D-Mena, will serve as chairman of the House Education Committee, while Harrelson, D-Texarkana, will lead the Judiciary Committee. Lowery, D-El Dorado, will serve as chairman of the Revenue Committee, while Sample, R-Hot Springs, was tapped to lead the House Transportation Committee.

The legislative session opened with the swearing in of House Speaker Robbie Wills.

Moore, D-Arkansas City, will serve as chairman for the Rules Committee - the committee that will hear proposals to establish a lottery and scholarship program in Arkansas.
