Clinton arrives at State Department for first day

— Hillary Rodham Clinton is being welcomed at the State Department, where she begins her tenure as secretary of state in an Obama administration that vows to boost America's diplomatic clout.

Clinton's appointment was confirmed overwhelmingly by the Senate on Wednesday.

She arrived for work under sunny morning skies at the main entrance to State Department headquarters and entered the C Street lobby to a burst of applause and cheers from hundreds of department employees.

After the welcoming ceremony, Clinton planned a round of calls to foreign leaders was scheduled to get briefings on intelligence matters and diplomatic security and receive a tour of the State Department building.
