Animal cruelty law takes effect

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel says he hopes training for the state's police and sheriff's offices will help them enforce Arkansas' new animal cruelty law.
Starting Friday, Arkansas will be the 46th state to make animal cruelty a felony. The new law, which also makes cockfighting a felony, comes after past efforts to stiffen animal cruelty laws in the state had faltered over arguments between animal welfare groups and hunters and farmers.
The University of Arkansas System's Criminal Justice Institute will soon begin training law enforcement officers on the new law. McDaniel's office gave the institute a $250,000 grant for the new training.
McDaniel said Thursday he looked forward to seeing the first animal cruelty case successfully prosecuted under the new law.
